Emergency yurt shelter in construction in Cali
On

Our friends of Casagrafo, Taller77 and Casa Cultural el Chontaduro are implementing community- and nature-based solutions to the urban havoc caused by the earthquake that shook the El Choco region on August 10th

Hundreds died and over 10,000 homes were destroyed. Now it’s time to rebuild.

In Cali, and particularly in the district of Aguablanca, people have learned to sort themselves out without much help from public institutions. From political resistance to grassroots mobilisation to homegrown construction, people are fighting back—and they need to know that humanity stands with them.

Andres, who runs the urbz Bogota office, didn’t think twice: he took a flight and spent time building shelters with Miguel of Casagrafo and others. Miguel is a master at building yurts and other structures with guadua, a super bamboo found in Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador.

You can show your solidarity by contributing to these grassroots, local and transparent organisations. We know them personally and we can vouch that your support will be put to good use.

Guadua, can be used for fast construction as well as permanent structures.
Volunteers in front of a yurt they just helped build. Casagrafo is opening a school to teach how to use guadua in the construction of all kinds of structures.
